Melodic Contour
The direction of a melody
Melodic contour is the overall shape of a melody: its pattern of rising, falling, and level motion in pitch over time, apart from the exact notes. A melody may ascend, descend, or arch up and then down. Contour is what lets a listener recognize a tune even when it is played in another key.
