Perception–Action Loop

Listen, identify, play — ears, mind, and fingers all active

The perception-action loop describes a trifecta that interplays continuously — sensing, processing, and acting. What you sense informs your processing, your processing informs your acting, and your acting may affect what you sense next, and so on.

This is the core of NoSheet's practice approach: listen, process, play. NoSheet aims to keep your ears, mind, and fingers engaged together as much as possible.

Conventional practice methods often allow for some parts to slack off — monotonous drills are really mostly acting, learning songs by sheet music or tabs doesn't require much sensing or processing, and conventional ear training doesn't tend to involve real acting. NoSheet requires you to process what you're listening to decide what to play, building a bridge where it is needed. You didn't aspire to learn an instrument so that you can robotically regurgitate the same sequence of mechanical movements — you wanted to make nice sounds, to partake in this joyful act.
